Ripe Mango Words

A mango lesson at the market
Suren snaps at his sister, then learns that harsh words are like unripe fruit.
Scene 1: The smudged poster
It was Mango Day at school. Suren had painted a giant mango for the class board. His little sister, Tara, toddled over and accidentally smudged the paint with her elbow.
"Ugh! Why are you always in the way?" Suren snapped.
Tara's lips trembled. The mango looked messy, and so did Suren's heart.

Scene 2: The sour and the ripe
At the market, Amma held up two mangoes. One was hard and green. The other was golden and soft.
"Which one would you choose?" she asked.
"The ripe one," Suren said, licking his lips.
Amma smiled and said the kural:
இனிய உளவாக இன்னாத கூறல்கனிஇருப்பக் காய்கவர்ந் தற்று.Suren looked down. He had picked sour words when sweet ones were right there.

Scene 3: The apology
Back home, Suren found Tara holding the smudged poster. She had tried to fix it with a crayon.
He sat beside her. "I was wrong. Can I help you finish it?" he said softly.
Tara nodded and leaned on his shoulder.
Sweet words, sweet hearts.
Scene 4: A new mango
The next day, Suren let Tara paint the mango leaf while he filled in the fruit. Their poster won a "Best Team" ribbon.
Suren grinned. The mango looked sweet—and so did his words.
Sweet words, sweet hearts.
