A small help, a big moment

Ajay wants to shine in the school play, but a friend's emergency pulls him into a tough choice.

Ages 3-106-7 min read

Scene 1: The drumbeat morning

The school hall smelled like jasmine garlands and fresh chalk. DUM... DUM... went the practice drum. Ajay wanted to stand in the front row for the farmer's dance.

Today he wanted one thing: to finish his steps perfectly.

Scene 2: The pin that vanished

Just before the curtain opened, Renu tugged Ajay's sleeve. Her costume pin had fallen and her blouse was slipping.

"I'm scared," she whispered.

Ajay had a safety pin—but it held his own scarf in place.

What would you do? Keep your pin and shine, or share it and ask the costume teacher for help?

Scene 3: The quick decision

Ajay handed her the pin. "Here. Let's call Dance Miss to fix it safely," he said, heart thumping.

Renu's eyes filled with relief. Dance Miss pinned the costume quickly, and Renu took a deep breath.

Right time, right hand.

Scene 4: A scarf turned prop

Ajay's scarf slipped. He tied it quickly and used it as a farmer's towel. The audience thought it was part of the act.

He smiled and kept dancing.

Scene 5: The kural after the applause

After the play, the teacher gathered the class. "Ajay's tiny help saved the show," she said, and shared the kural:

காலத்தி னாற்செய்த நன்றி சிறிதெனினும்
ஞாலத்தின் மாணப் பெரிது.
Even a small help given at the right time can be very great.

Ajay felt his shoulders lighten. He hadn't lost the moment—he had made it bigger.

Scene 6: A thank-you snack

Renu found him later with a small cup of warm sundal. "For you," she said. "Right time, right hand."

Ajay laughed. The sundal tasted like victory.

Scene 7: The next rehearsal

The next week, Ajay taught a new kid the steps. He noticed how much easier it felt to help early, not just at the last minute.
