Words that stay

Eshan learns that words can leave a mark longer than a small burn.

Ages 3-105-6 min read

Scene 1: The playground tease

In kabaddi, Eshan shouted, "Slow snail!" when his teammate, Mani, missed a tag. The other kids laughed.

Mani's shoulders drooped. He stopped playing and sat by the water pot.

Words can hug, words can sting.

A child sits by a water pot looking sad while others play kabaddi
Laughing voices can still feel sharp.

Scene 2: The hot bajji

At home, Eshan grabbed a bajji too fast. It was hot. He yelped and dropped it.

Amma put cool water on his finger. "See? The burn will heal," she said.

A child cools a small burn on his finger at home
The burn stung, then softened.

Scene 3: The kural from Thatha

That evening, Thatha heard about the kabaddi game. He held Eshan's hand and said the kural:

தீயினாற் சுட்டபுண் உள்ளாறும் ஆறாதே
நாவினாற் சுட்ட வடு.
Burns from fire can heal, but wounds from harsh words can stay.

Eshan looked at his finger. It already felt better. He thought about Mani, and his stomach tightened.

Scene 4: The apology

The next day, Eshan walked up to Mani. "I said a hurt word. I'm sorry," he said. "You are fast when you want to be. Want to practice with me?"

Mani nodded. They ran together, laughing.

Words can hug, words can sting.
